Strayer Education, Inc. Reports Fourth Quarter and Full Year Revenues and Earnings; Winter Term 2016 Enrollments
HERNDON, Va.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--February 4, 2016--Strayer Education, Inc. (Nasdaq: STRA) today announced financial results for the three months and year ended December 31, 2015. Financial highlights are as follows:
Three Months Ended December 31
- Revenues for the three months ended December 31, 2015 decreased 2% to $113.7 million, compared to $116.1 million for the same period in 2014, principally due to lower revenue per student, partially offset by higher enrollment.
- Income from operations was $21.7 million for the three months ended December 31, 2015, compared to $22.6 million for the same period in 2014, a decrease of 4%. Operating margin was 19.1% for the fourth quarter, compared to 19.5% for the same period in 2014.
- Net income was $13.0 million for the fourth quarter of 2015, compared to $12.9 million for the same period in 2014, an increase of 1%.
- Diluted earnings per share was $1.21 for the three months ended December 31, 2015, unchanged from the same period in 2014. Diluted weighted average shares outstanding increased to 10,782,000 from 10,734,000 for the same period in 2014.
Year Ended December 31
- Revenues for the year ended December 31, 2015 decreased 3% to $434.4 million, compared to $446.0 million for the same period in 2014, principally due to lower revenue per student.
- Income from operations was $69.7 million, compared to $81.7 million for the same period in 2014, a decrease of 15%. Income from operations in 2015 and 2014 includes non-cash adjustments to the Company’s liability for losses on facilities no longer in use. Excluding these items, income from operations was $69.3 million in 2015 and $77.6 million in 2014. Operating income margin was 16.0% for the year ended December 31, 2015, compared to 18.3% as reported in 2014, or 15.9% for 2015, compared to 17.4% for 2014, excluding the non-cash adjustments.
- Net income was $40.0 million, compared to $46.4 million for the year ended December 31, 2015, a decrease of 14%. Excluding non-cash adjustments, net income for the year ended December 31, 2015 was $39.8 million, compared to $43.8 million for the same period in 2014.
- Diluted earnings per share was $3.73, compared to $4.35 for the year ended December 31, 2014, a decrease of 14%. Excluding non-cash adjustments, diluted earnings per share was $3.70, compared to $4.12 for the same period in 2014. Diluted weighted average shares outstanding increased to 10,740,000 from 10,650,000 for the same period in 2014.
Balance Sheet and Cash Flow
At December 31, 2015, the Company had cash and cash equivalents of $106.9 million and no debt. The Company generated $76.9 million in cash from operating activities in 2015, compared to $77.6 million during the same period in 2014. Capital expenditures in 2015 were $12.7 million, compared to $6.9 million for the same period in 2014.
The Company had $70.0 million of share repurchase authorization remaining at December 31, 2015. No shares were repurchased in the fourth quarter of 2015.
For the fourth quarter of 2015, bad debt expense as a percentage of revenues was 3.3%, compared to 4.0% for the same period in 2014.
Student Enrollment
Total enrollments at Strayer University for the winter term 2016 increased to 40,872 students, from 40,728 students for the winter term 2015. New student enrollments decreased by 5%, and continuing student enrollments increased by 2%.
2016 Annual Meeting of Stockholders
The Company announced today that its 2016 Annual Meeting of Stockholders will take place on Tuesday, May 3, 2016 at the Company’s office located at 2303 Dulles Station Blvd., Herndon, Virginia 20171. The record date for this annual meeting will be March 4, 2016.
Common Stock and Common Stock Equivalents
At December 31, 2015, the Company had 11,027,177 common shares issued and outstanding, including 434,327 shares of restricted stock. The Company also had 200,000 restricted stock units outstanding, and 100,000 vested stock options outstanding.
