     FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE (Danville, Virginia) -- At its meeting on November
16, 2004, the Board of Directors of American National Bankshares Inc. (NASDAQ:
AMNB), parent company of American National Bank and Trust Company, declared a
quarterly cash dividend of $0.20 per share of common stock, payable on December
17, 2004, to shareholders of record on December 3, 2004. This represents an
increase of 5.3% when compared to the same period one year prior.

Danville, Chatham, Collinsville, Gretna, Martinsville, Henry County, and South
