F. Ahmanson & Company (NYSE:AHM), parent company of Home Savings of America, today announced that its Board of Directors has authorized a new program to purchase an additional $250 million of its common stock, following completion of its existing program. This will be the company's fourth common stock purchase program. Including this new program, the company will have authorized, since October 1995, $900 million to purchase common stock and $175 million to retire high cost preferred stock. Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Charles R. Rinehart said, "The Board's approval of a fourth common stock repurchase program again confirms the company's commitment to stock buyback as a key strategy to build shareholder value. This commitment together with progress in our other strategic initiatives have propelled our transformation to a full-service bank for consumers and small business." Through March 31, 1997, the company had purchased 19.2 million common shares, or 16% of common shares outstanding prior to the commencement of the original stock purchase program, at an average price of $27.11. At March 31, 1997, the company had 100.6 million common shares outstanding. H. F.
