The variance relates primarily to underwriting losses in its commercial insurance units and personal auto results. While the amount of catastrophe losses, which totaled approximately $35 million for the quarter, was similar to the amount of these losses in the first quarter of 1999, the company experienced increased noncatastrophe claim activity, particularly in the month of June. "The increase in claims in June was widespread and occurred in various geographic areas, "said Chairman and CEO Roger Eigsti. SAFECO will release its second quarter earnings on July 26, 1999. 3 SIGNATURE Pursuant to the requirements of the Securities Exchange Act of 1934, the Registrant has duly caused this report to be signed on its behalf by the undersigned hereunto duly authorized.
