On October 16, 2002, Provident Bankshares Corporation (the "Company")
issued a press release announcing that Peter M. Martin will be retiring as
Chairman and Chief Executive Officer in April, 2003 and that Gary N. Geisel has
been designated as his successor by the Company's Board of Directors. The
Company also announced that Kevin G. Byrnes has been selected to succeed Gary N.
Geisel as President and Chief Operating Officer in April, 2003. A copy of the
press release is attached hereto as Exhibit 99.1.
