In March 1997, a purported class action entitled Patterman v. The Travelers, Inc., et al. was commenced in the Superior Court of Richmond County, Georgia, alleging, among other things, violations of the Georgia RICO statute and other state laws by an affiliate of the Company, Primerica Financial Services, Inc. and certain of its affiliates. Plaintiffs seek unspecified compensatory and punitive damages and other relief. From February 1998 through April 2000, various motions for transfer of the lawsuit were heard and appealed. In April 2000, the matter was remanded to the Superior Court of Richmond County by the Georgia Supreme Court. Also, in April 2000 defendants moved from summary judgement on all counts of the complaint. Discovery commenced in May 2000. Defendants intend to vigorously contest the litigation. 43
