              METLIFE COMPLETES SALE OF SSRM HOLDINGS TO BLACKROCK

NEW YORK, January 31, 2005 - MetLife, Inc. (NYSE: MET) announced today that the
sale of SSRM Holdings Inc. to BlackRock, Inc. (NYSE: BLK) has been completed.
SSRM Holdings is the holding company of State Street Research & Management
Company and SSR Realty Advisors Inc. The companies announced the transaction on
August 26, 2004. The transaction has received required approvals, including
regulatory approvals.

The sale is not expected to have a material impact on MetLife's 2005 operating
earnings, although MetLife expects the transaction to have a positive impact to
net income of between $145 million and $165 million.
