Pursuant to Rule 477(a) under the Securities Act of 1933, as amended, New
England Life Insurance Company ("NELICO") and New England Variable Annuity
Separate Account (the "Registrant") hereby request the withdrawal of
Registrant's initial registration statement on Form N-4 for the American
Forerunner Series Contracts (the "Contracts"), SEC File No. 33-64879, filed
with the Securities and Exchange Commission on December 11, 1995, and the
amendments thereto listed below.

Amendments to the Registration Statement were filed:

   .    June 6, 1996, Accession No. 0000950109-96-003656,
   .    April 30, 1997, Accession No. 0000950109-97-003414,
   .    May 1, 1998, Accession No. 0000950109-98-002884 and
   .    April 28, 1999, Accession No. 0000950109-99-001678.

NELICO and the Registrant are requesting withdrawal of the Registration
Statement (as amended) for the Contracts because NELICO determined not to sell
the Contracts. Therefore, NELICO and the Registrant hereby request an order be
issued granting their request for withdrawal of the Registration Statement (as
amended) for the Contracts as soon as practicable. No Contracts were sold in
connection with the Registration Statement.
