Revenues. Our revenues include sales to customers of coal produced at our operations and coal purchased from third parties. Transportation costs are included in cost of coal sales and amounts billed by us to our customers for transportation are included in revenues.
On a consolidated basis, coal sales in the third quarter of 2024 were approximately $126.7 million, or 17.0%, less than in the third quarter of 2023, while tons sold decreased by approximately 3.0 million tons, or 15.5%. Metallurgical coal sales decreased approximately $70.9 million, primarily due to decreased pricing. Thermal coal sales decreased approximately $55.8 million due to decreased sales volume to domestic utility customers. Cost of sales. Our cost of sales for the third quarter of 2024 decreased approximately $38.3 million, or 6.4%, versus the third quarter of 2023. The decrease in cost of sales was primarily due to decreased sales sensitive costs of approximately $19.2 million, and reduced repairs and supplies costs of approximately $18.2 million.
