Progress Energy delivers on commitments, CEO tells shareholders in 2010 annual report
03/31/2011
RALEIGH, N.C. (March 31, 2011) – Progress Energy (NYSE: PGN) delivered strong results during a time of major transition for the company and the industry, and continues to build on success in its core mission of serving customers and creating financial returns for shareholders. That’s the message from Progress Energy Chairman, President and CEO Bill Johnson in the company’s 2010 annual report released to shareholders today.
“We are encouraged by the prospects for growth in our customer base and the overall economy,” Johnson wrote. “But we continue to keep a sharp focus on excelling in the daily fundamentals and meeting our current responsibilities. Operational focus and financial discipline are essential even as we adapt to a changing industry and prepare for the decades to come.”
Progress Energy achieved ongoing earnings per share in its original targeted range or higher for the fifth consecutive year in 2010, while maintaining its long record of commitment to the dividend.
Johnson also addressed the proposed merger between Progress Energy and Charlotte-based Duke Energy, announced in January.
“By joining forces with Duke Energy, our neighbor for more than a century, we will be in a better position to manage the transformation occurring in our industry and hold down some of the rate pressure on our customers,” Johnson wrote. “The combined company will have greater financial strength to support potential dividend growth while raising the large amounts of capital needed to modernize our system, meet new environmental rules and keep up with population growth.”
But Johnson also reinforced Progress Energy’s commitment to managing the present.
“Merger approvals and integration planning will require attention in 2011,” Johnson wrote. “Even so, we are keeping our main focus on the business at hand this year at Progress Energy, and we have a clear plan for success.”
