Dunmore, PA - Fidelity D&D Bancorp, Inc., (OTC Bulletin Board: FDBC), parent company of the Fidelity Deposit and Discount Bank, announced net income for the second quarter ended June 30, 2003 of $923 thousand, a $186 thousand decrease as compared to net income of $1.1 million during the second quarter of 2002. Earnings per diluted share were $0.49 and $0.61 for the second quarter ended June 30, 2003 and 2002, respectively.
Total interest income decreased by $1.6 million or 15.5% from $8.7 million for the second quarter of 2002 to $7.1 million for the quarter ended June 30, 2003. Market interest rates continued to decline during the year, adversely affecting yield on earning assets, resulting in a reduction of interest income. Interest expense decreased by $848 thousand or 18.4%, from $4.6 million for the second quarter of 2002 to $3.7 million for the quarter ended June 30, 2003. Rates paid on deposits have also decreased as market deposit rates declined throughout the year. However, the interest expense reduction did not fully offset the reduced interest income for the quarter. The level of interest expense reduction was suppressed from the contractual inability to reprice long-term borrowings and certain long-term high-cost time deposits. As a result, net interest income decreased to $3.4 million for the quarter ended June 30, 2003, an overall decrease of $764 thousand or 18.2% over the quarter ended June 30, 2002.
The Company has focused on increasing fee based traditional banking and financial services provided to customers along with mortgage banking opportunities, which contributed to the other income growth of $281 thousand or 28.7% over second quarter 2002. Other operating expenses decreased $144 thousand or 4.6% over the same period in 2002. Although certain costs increased from additional personnel expense and depreciation, other net operating expenses declined throughout the quarter.
The Company reported growth of 1.3% in total assets from $578.0 million at December 31, 2002 to $585.8 million at June 30, 2003. Investments were $144.2 million and net loans totaled $383.4 million at June 30, 2003. Total deposits were $432.5 million at June 30, 2003.
Stockholders’ equity at June 30, 2003 increased to $45.6 million from $45.2 million at December 31, 2002. The growth in stockholders' equity of $410 thousand resulted from the retention of net income after dividends and an increase in common stock issued through the dividend reinvestment plan less the $458 thousand treasury stock acquisition during the quarter.
Dividends declared by the Company during the second quarter of 2003 were $401 thousand, of which $130 thousand was reinvested through the dividend reinvestment plan. For the same period in 2002, $383 thousand of dividends was declared with $120 thousand reinvested through the dividend reinvestment plan.
The Fidelity Deposit and Discount Bank has twelve community banking offices and twenty-two ATM locations in Lackawanna and Luzerne Counties. Â
