First Ottawa Bancshares Announces Quarterly Earnings
Ottawa, Ill., April 25, 2008 - First Ottawa Bancshares, Inc. (Pink Sheets: FOTB.PK) reported net income for the three months ended March 31, 2008 of $468,000, or $.72 per common share, compared to net income of $499,000, or $.77 per common share, for the three months ended March 31, 2007.
First quarter income decreased $31,000, or 6.2%, from the first quarter of 2007. Net interest income after provision for loan losses increased $221,000 to $2.2 million, which was the net result of an $8,000 increase in total interest income, and a $198,000 decrease in interest expense. The largest decrease in interest expense was due to a decrease in interest paid on money market accounts. This reduction was due to both rate and volume factors.
Non-interest income decreased $235,000, or 36.9%, compared to 2007. The decrease in non-interest income was primarily due to a large decrease in the market value of derivatives related to certificates of deposit held for investment in the current period. Derivatives market value losses related to indexed certificates of deposit were $158,000 in the first quarter 2008 compared to market value income of $29,000 for the same period in 2007. Service charge income on deposits experienced a decrease of $49,000 to $191,000 for the first quarter 2008 compared to prior year. This decrease was partially offset by an increase in the gain on the sale of loans of $21,000 and an increase in gain on the sale of securities of $22,000 in 2008 over the same period in 2007.
The Company’s non-interest expense was $2.0 million for the three months ended March 31, 2008 and 2007. Salaries and benefits, the largest component of non-interest expense, decreased $61,000, or 5.3%, to $1.1 million due to a slight reduction in staff. Modest decreases in supplies expense of $10,000 and amortization of core deposit intangible expense of $10,000 were offset by an increase in occupancy and equipment expense of $8,000, increased data processing expense of $36,000, and other expense of $50,000. Amortization is related to the core deposit intangible resulting from the purchase of our two Streator branches in 2003. In addition, income tax expense decreased $5,000 to $131,000 in 2008 compared to the same period in 2007.
Total assets at March 31, 2008 increased to $280.7 million from $269.2 million at December 31, 2007. Total deposits at March 31, 2008 were $246.5 million, compared to $240.4 million at December 31, 2007. Total equity at March 31, 2008 and December 31, 2007 was $25.3 million and $24.6 million respectively.
