Inphi Corporation Announces First Quarter 2013 Results
SANTA CLARA, Calif., May 1, 2013 – Inphi Corporation (NYSE: IPHI), a leading provider of high-speed, mixed signal semiconductor solutions for the communications and computing markets, today announced financial results for its first quarter ended March 31, 2013.
Revenue for the first quarter of 2013 was $22.6 million, compared with $20.2 million for the first quarter of 2012.
As reported under U.S. generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP), net loss for the first quarter of 2013 was $7.7 million, or ($0.27) per diluted common share, compared with GAAP net loss of $1.5 million, or ($0.05) per diluted common share, for the first quarter of 2012.
Gross margin on a GAAP basis for the first quarter of 2013 was 63.3% compared with 63.2% of revenue for the first quarter of 2012.
Inphi reports net income (loss), gross margin, and earnings per share in accordance with GAAP and, additionally, on a non-GAAP basis. A reconciliation of GAAP to non-GAAP net income, gross margin, and earnings per share, as well as a description of the items excluded from the non-GAAP calculations, is included in the financial statements portion of this press release.
Revenue on a non-GAAP basis for the first quarter of 2013 was $22.6 million, compared with $20.9 million for the first quarter of 2012.
Gross margin on a non-GAAP basis for the first quarter of 2013 was 64.3%, compared with 65.2% for the first quarter of 2012 and 65.4% in Q4 2012. The sequential difference primarily reflects the impact of an NRE project, which contributed $0.6 million to the top line in Q4 2012, the quarter in which it was completed. Underlying product gross margins, a function of many factors, have been relatively steady averaging only an approximate 20 basis point decline per quarter.
Non-GAAP net income for the first quarter of 2013 was $31,000, or $0.00 per diluted common share. This compared with non-GAAP net income of $1.0 million, or $0.03 per diluted common share for the first quarter of 2012.
“I am very pleased with the progress we are making,” said Ford Tamer, President and CEO. “We see this quarter as a pivotal turning point both for the markets we serve as well as for Inphi. To date this year, we have executed ahead of our plan. We expect to continue this momentum, based on new product-driven cycles around 100 Gigabit communications in 2013, and on the strength of our future generation server products and platforms looking out to second half 2013 and 2014. As our business returns to sequential growth in Q2, I would like to thank our strategic customers and partners for their support and our hard working employees for their achievements to position us for a bright future.”

RECONCILIATION OF GAAP NET INCOME TO NON-GAAP NET INCOME
(in thousands of dollars, except share and per share amounts)
To supplement the audited financial data presented on a GAAP basis, the Company discloses certain non-GAAP financial measures, which exclude stock-based compensation, abandoned office space costs and certain warranty, legal costs and other claims. These non-GAAP financial measures are not in accordance with GAAP. These results should only be used to evaluate the Company’s results of operations in conjunction with the corresponding GAAP measures. The Company believes that its non-GAAP financial information provides useful information to management and investors regarding financial and business trends relating to its financial condition and results of operations because it excludes charges or benefits that management considers to be outside of the Company’s core operating results. The Company believes that the non-GAAP measures of gross margin, net income and earnings per share in combination with the Company’s financial results calculated in accordance with GAAP, provide investors with additional perspective and a more meaningful understanding of the Company’s ongoing operating performance. In addition, the Company’s management uses these non-GAAP measures to review and assess the financial performance of the Company, to determine executive officer incentive compensation and to plan and forecast performance in future periods. The Company’s non-GAAP measurements are not prepared in accordance with GAAP, and are not an alternative to GAAP financial information, and may be calculated differently than non-GAAP financial information disclosed by other companies.
