PSB Holdings, Inc. Reports Earnings
For the Three Months Ended September 30, 2007
PUTNAM, CT, October 16, 2007 – PSB Holdings, Inc. (the “Company”) (NASDAQ: PSBH), the holding company for Putnam Savings Bank, reported net income of $539,000 or $.08 per basic and diluted share for the three months ended September 30, 2007 versus net income of $507,000 or $.08 per basic share and $.07 per diluted share for the three months ended September 30, 2006. This represents an increase of 6.3% in net income from the three months ended September 30, 2006 to September 30, 2007.
Asset Growth
At September 30, 2007, total assets were $489.7 million, a decrease of $1.5 million, or 0.3% from June 30, 2007 and an increase of $20.1 million, or 4.3% from September 30, 2006. This growth in assets since September 30, 2006 reflected an increase of $26.8 million, or 12.7%, in total loans to $238.3 million at September 30, 2007 from $211.5 million at September 30, 2006 and a decrease of $6.7 million, or 2.9%, in investment securities to $222.5 million at September 30, 2007 from $229.2 million at September 30, 2006. Borrowed funds increased by $35.1 million, or 30.6%, to $149.7 million at September 30, 2007 from $114.6 million at September 30, 2006. Total deposits decreased by $15.9 million, or 5.3%, to $285.2 million at September 30, 2007 from $301.1 million at September 30, 2006. This decrease in deposits was related to a decrease of $24.1 million, or 78.4% in brokered deposits to $6.6 million as of September 30, 2007 as compared to $30.7 million as of September 30, 2006. Excluding brokered deposits, total deposits increased by $8.1 million or 3.0% from September 30, 2006 to September 30, 2007.
The growth in total loans compared to last year was primarily due to an increase in commercial loans of $6.4 million, or 12.7%, and an increase in residential loans of $20.3 million, or 12.7%. The provision for loan loss was $12,000 for the three months ended September 30, 2007 as compared to $85,000 for the three months ended September 30, 2006.
“The decrease in short term interest rates has positively impacted our net interest margin, which, buoyed by the continued strong performance of our lending operations and minimal loan loss provision, has served to increase net income for the quarter,” said Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Thomas A. Borner.
Net Interest Income
Net interest income for the three months ended September 30, 2007 was $2.8 million, an increase of $85,000 or 3.2% over the three months ended September 30, 2006. This was primarily due to the increase in the net interest margin. The net interest margin for the three months ended September 30, 2007 was 2.38% as compared to 2.35% for the three months ended September 30, 2006. Average interest-earning assets increased $8.9 million or 2.0% to $459.1 million for the three months ended September 30, 2007 from $450.2 million for the three months ended September 30, 2006. The yield on average interest-earning assets increased 29 basis points to 5.84% for the three months ended September 30, 2007 as compared to 5.55% for the three months ended September 30, 2006. Average interest-bearing liabilities increased by $11.6 million or 3.0% to $393.7 million for the three months ended September 30, 2007 from $382.1 million for the three months ended September 30, 2006. The cost of average interest-bearing liabilities increased 27 basis points to 4.04% for the three months ended September 30, 2007 as compared to 3.77% for the three months ended September 30, 2006.
Provision for Loan Loss
The provision for loan loss for the three months ended September 30, 2007 was $12,000, a decrease of $73,000 or 85.9% over the three months ended September 30, 2006.
Noninterest Income and Expense
Noninterest income for the three months ended September 30, 2007 was $759,000 an increase of $56,000 or 8.0% from the three months ended September 30, 2006. This increase was primarily due to a $35,000 increase in service fee income. Noninterest expense for the three months ended September 30, 2007 was $2.8 million, an increase of $88,000 or 3.3% over the three months ended September 30, 2006. This increase was primarily due to an increase in salaries and benefits of $43,000, and an increase in other expenses of $61,000. This was partially offset by a decrease in occupancy expense of $16,000.
