ONEBEACON REPORTS $10.83 BOOK VALUE PER SHARE
HAMILTON, Bermuda (August 3, 2016) - OneBeacon Insurance Group, Ltd. (NYSE: OB) today reported book value per share of $10.83, reflecting an increase of 2.4% for the second quarter and 6.9% through the first six months of 2016, including dividends.
Mike Miller, CEO of OneBeacon, said, “Growth in book value per share at the half-year is healthy at 7%, reflecting good investment returns and tax benefits. Poor loss experience in our Healthcare business (primarily due to liability claims in extended care facilities) and in our Programs business resulted in a 103% combined ratio in the quarter. Our underwriting remains profitable year-to-date thanks to a portfolio of strong businesses. Corrective underwriting actions and soft market conditions resulted in a decline in premium in the quarter and year-to-date. We are confident that we will maintain a profitable and growing portfolio of businesses over time.”
OneBeacon reported comprehensive income of $24.7 million for the second quarter of 2016, compared to $3.6 million for the second quarter of last year. Operating income was $8.5 million or $0.09 per share for the second quarter of 2016, compared to operating income of $12.4 million or $0.13 per share for the second quarter of 2015.
For the six months ended June 30, 2016, the company reported $71.1 million of comprehensive income, compared to $27.9 million for the first six months of 2015. Operating income was $44.1 million or $0.47 per
1
share for the first six months of 2016, compared to $27.4 million or $0.29 per share through the first half of 2015.
During the second quarter of 2016, the company recorded a $3.5 million tax benefit due to the settlement of an IRS examination for years 2010-2012. During the first quarter of 2016, OneBeacon recorded a $12.8 million tax benefit related to a favorable IRS settlement for the tax years 2007-2009, for a total year-to-date benefit of $16.3 million.
The first-half prior year’s comprehensive income and operating income included a $3.7 million negative pre-tax adjustment to the gain on the sale of Essentia Insurance Company.
During the quarter, there were no common shares repurchased under the company’s 2007 share repurchase authorization. Year- to-date repurchases total 850,349 common shares for a total of $10.6 million, reflecting an average price of $12.42 per share.
Operating income is a non-GAAP financial measure, which is explained later in this release.
Insurance Operations: OneBeacon's GAAP combined ratio was 102.9% and 98.9% for the second quarter and the first six months of 2016, compared to 95.1% and 95.2% for the second quarter and the first six months of last year. Net unfavorable loss reserve development totaled 5.7 points and 2.8 points for the second quarter and the first six months of 2016, while loss reserve development was not significant in the second quarter and first six months of last year. The expense ratio was 36.7% for the second quarter and 37.4% for the first six months of 2016, compared to 34.2% and 35.7% for the second quarter and first six months of last year. The increase in the expense ratios was driven by lower premium volume and changing business mix.
Net written premiums were $261.0 million in the second quarter of 2016 and $541.1 million through the first six months of 2016, a decrease of 18.7% and 11.0% from the comparable periods of last year. During 2015, the company exited its crop and lawyers liability businesses, and nonrenewed an affiliated reinsurance treaty. These businesses reported net written premiums that totaled $31.6 million and $23.0 million in the second quarter and the first six months of 2015. Additionally, during the second quarter and first six months of 2016, OneBeacon reduced premium writings in its Healthcare and Programs businesses through corrective underwriting actions. Excluding Healthcare and Programs, net written premiums from ongoing businesses were flat in the second quarter and declined 2.7% through the first six months of 2016 compared to last year, reflecting the persistent soft market conditions.
2
Investment Results: OneBeacon’s second quarter 2016 total return on invested assets was 1.5% compared to (0.1%) for the second quarter of 2015. These pre-tax results included net realized and unrealized investment gains of $24.7 million and net investment income of $12.1 million for the second quarter of 2016, compared to net realized and unrealized investment losses of $14.0 million and net investment income of $10.1 million for the second quarter of 2015.
Through the first six months of 2016, the total return on invested assets was 2.7% compared to 0.9% through June 30, 2015. These results included net realized and unrealized investment gains of $41.3 million and net investment income of $26.5 million, compared to net realized and unrealized investment gains of $0.2 million and net investment income of $20.6 million for the first six months of 2015. The return on the surplus notes issued as part of the runoff sale transaction that closed in December 2014 contributed roughly half a point to the company’s current quarter and half-year investment returns in 2016 versus no impact in the prior year comparable periods.

Discussion of Non-GAAP Financial Measures
This earnings release includes non-GAAP financial measures that have been reconciled to their most comparable GAAP financial measures. OneBeacon believes these measures to be useful supplements to the comparable GAAP measures in evaluating OneBeacon's financial performance.
Operating income is a non-GAAP financial measure that excludes net realized and change in unrealized investment gains, loss from discontinued operations, gain from discontinued operations, and the related tax effects, from net income attributable to OneBeacon's common shareholders. OneBeacon believes that this non-GAAP financial measure provides a useful alternative picture of the underlying operating activities of the company to the GAAP measure of net income attributable to OneBeacon's common shareholders, as it removes variability in the timing of realized and change in unrealized investment gains which may be heavily influenced by investment market conditions and also removes the impact related to discontinued operations. Although key to the company's overall financial performance, OneBeacon believes that net realized and change in unrealized investment gains are largely independent of the underwriting decision-making process. Management also believes that the impact of operations that have been discontinued are not relevant to evaluating financial performance on a comparative basis. The reconciliation of net income attributable to OneBeacon's common shareholders to operating income is included on page 11.
Operating income per share is calculated by dividing operating income (a non-GAAP financial measure described above) by the weighted average number of common shares outstanding. Management believes that operating income per share is a useful alternative picture of the underlying operating activities of the company as it removes variability in the timing of investment gains and losses which may be heavily influenced by investment market conditions. Management also believes that the impact of operations that have been discontinued are not relevant to evaluating financial performance on a comparative basis. Net income attributable to OneBeacon's common shareholders per share is the most directly comparable GAAP measure. As described above, the reconciliation of net income attributable to OneBeacon's common shareholders to operating income is included on page 11. The calculation of operating income per share is also included on page 11.
