CDW Reports First Quarter Results for 2011
Company Achieves Record First Quarter Net Sales, Gross Profit and Adjusted EBITDA
VERNON HILLS, Ill.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--May 2, 2011--CDW Corporation:
First quarter 2011 highlights:
- Net sales of $2.130 billion, up 10.1 percent year-over-year
- Fifth consecutive quarter of year-over-year double digit sales growth
- Gross profit margin of 16.5 percent, up 70 basis points year-over-year
- Adjusted EBITDA of $155.5 million, up 16.7 percent year-over-year
CDW Corporation, a leading multi-brand technology solutions provider to business, government, education and healthcare, today announced first quarter 2011 results.
“Business momentum continued in the first quarter as CDW built upon 2010’s record performance by delivering all-time first quarter highs for net sales, gross profit and Adjusted EBITDA,” said John A. Edwardson, chairman and chief executive officer. “Double digit sales growth coupled with gross profit margin expansion of 70 basis points year-over-year indicates the strength of our customer value proposition, while Adjusted EBITDA growth of 16.7 percent demonstrates that our coworkers continue to drive productivity as they provide leading customer service.”
“The first quarter showed the benefit of our portfolio of customer channels as double digit revenue growth across our medium/large, small business and healthcare channels mitigated macro headwinds faced by our government and education channels,” continued Thomas E. Richards, president and chief operating officer. “We delivered strong first quarter financial results while continuing to invest for future growth by adding selling and service delivery resources and launching the new brand campaign.”
“Our priorities for 2011 are unchanged,” added Edwardson. “We expect to profitably grow faster than the market while investing in selling resources and service delivery capabilities.”
First Quarter of 2011:
Total net sales in the first quarter of 2011 were $2.130 billion compared to $1.934 billion in the first quarter of 2010, an increase of 10.1 percent. Average daily sales in the first quarter of 2011 were $33.3 million compared to $30.7 million in the first quarter of 2010, representing an 8.4 percent increase. There were 64 selling days in the first quarter of 2011 and 63 selling days in the first quarter of 2010.
- Total Corporate segment net sales in the first quarter of 2011 were $1.279 billion compared to $1.117 billion in the first quarter of 2010, representing an increase of 14.6 percent. Average daily sales in the first quarter of 2011 were $20.0 million compared to $17.7 million in the first quarter of 2010, representing a 12.8 percent increase. Sales growth in the Corporate segment was driven by strong performance in both the Medium/Large sales channel and the Small Business sales channel.
- Total Public segment net sales in the first quarter of 2011 were $724 million compared to $720 million in the first quarter of 2010, representing an increase of 0.5 percent. Average daily sales in the first quarter of 2011 were $11.3 million compared to $11.4 million in the first quarter of 2010, representing a decrease of 1.1 percent. The Public segment was led by especially strong performance in our Healthcare sales channel.
Gross profit for the first quarter of 2011 was $351.5 million compared to $305.9 million in the first quarter of 2010, representing an increase of 14.9 percent. Gross profit margin was 16.5 percent in the first quarter of 2011 compared to 15.8 percent in the same period of 2010, as the year-over-year gross margin percent improved for the fourth consecutive quarter. The increase in gross profit margin was primarily due to favorable price/mix in product margin, including business channel mix as our Federal government business declined as a percentage of total sales. Increased vendor funding also had a favorable impact on gross margin.
Total selling and administrative expenses, including advertising expense, was $259.8 million in the first quarter of 2011 compared to $234.6 million in the first quarter of 2010, representing an increase of 10.7 percent. The increase in total selling and administrative expenses in the first quarter of 2011 was primarily due to increased sales and other variable compensation costs, such as incentive bonuses, consistent with higher sales and gross profit along with increased advertising expense.
Adjusted EBITDA was $155.5 million in the first quarter of 2011 compared to $133.3 million in the first quarter of 2010, representing an increase of 16.7 percent. Adjusted EBITDA margin was 7.3 percent in the first quarter of 2011 compared to 6.9 percent in the first quarter of 2010.

EBITDA AND ADJUSTED EBITDA
(dollars in millions) | |||||||||
(unaudited) | |||||||||
We have included reconciliations of EBITDA and Adjusted EBITDA for the three months ended March 31, 2011 and 2010 below. EBITDA is defined as earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization. Adjusted EBITDA, which is a measure defined in our credit agreements, means EBITDA adjusted for certain items which are described in the table below. Both EBITDA and Adjusted EBITDA are considered non-GAAP financial measures. Generally, a non-GAAP financial measure is a numerical measure of a company’s performance, financial position, or cash flows that either excludes or includes amounts that are not normally included or excluded in the most directly comparable measure calculated and presented in accordance with GAAP. We believe that EBITDA and Adjusted EBITDA provide helpful information with respect to our operating performance and cash flows including our ability to meet our future debt service, capital expenditures, and working capital requirements. Adjusted EBITDA also provides helpful information as it is the primary measure used in certain financial covenants contained in our credit agreements.
