JACKSONVILLE BANCORP, INC. ANNOUNCES QUARTERLY EARNINGS
Jacksonville Bancorp, Inc. (NASDAQ Capital Market – JXSB) reported unaudited net income for the three months ended September 30, 2010, of $653,000, or $0.35 per share of common stock, basic and diluted, compared to net income of $537,000, or $0.28 per share of common stock, basic and diluted, for the three months ended September 30, 2009. The Company reported unaudited net income of $1,332,000, or $0.70 per share, basic and diluted, for the nine months ended September 30, 2010, compared to net income of $966,000, or $0.50 per share, basic and diluted, for the nine months ended September 30, 2009.
Net income increased $116,000 during the third quarter of 2010, as compared to the third quarter of 2009, due to increases of $183,000 in net interest income and $302,000 in non-interest income, partially offset by increases of $216,000 in non-interest expense, $125,000 in the provision for loan losses, and $28,000 in income taxes. The increase in net interest income reflected a greater decrease in interest expense than interest income during the comparative three month period. We experienced decreases of $155,000 in interest income and $338,000 in interest expense during the quarter ended September 30, 2010, as compared to the same quarter of 2009. Net interest income has benefited from a steepened yield curve as lower short-term market rates of interest have resulted in our deposits repricing faster than our loans, which have yields tied to higher long-term rates. Non-interest income increased $302,000 during the third quarter of 2010 mostly due to increases of $137,000 in commission income, $112,000 in net income from mortgage banking operations and $36,000 in gains on sales of securities. Non-interest expense increased $216,000 primarily due to increases of $139,000 in compensation and benefits expense, $17,000 in advertising expense, and $15,000 in occupancy and equipment expense.
Net income increased $367,000 during the nine months ended September 30, 2010 compared to the same period of 2009. The increase in net income was due to increases of $267,000 in net interest income and $124,000 in non-interest income and a decrease of $650,000 in the provision for loan losses, partially offset by increases of $505,000 in non-interest expense and $169,000 in income taxes. The increase in net interest income during the first nine months of 2010, compared to the same period of 2009, was due to the net effect of decreases of $920,000 in interest income and $1.2 million in interest expense. The decrease of $650,000 in the provision for loan losses during the first nine months of 2010 was primarily due to a significantly higher level of provisions made during the second quarter of 2009. 60;Management reviews the allowance for loan losses quarterly and has deemed the current amount adequate. The allowance for loan losses has increased to $2.9 million, or 1.6% of total loans, at September 30, 2010, from $2.3 million, or 1.3% of total loans, at December 31, 2009. The increase of $124,000 in non-interest income during this same period was primarily due to increases of $290,000 in commission income and $146,000 in service charges on deposit accounts, partially offset by a decrease of $303,000 in net income on mortgage banking operations. The increase of $505,000 in non-interest expense was primarily due to increases of $257,000 in the impairment of mortgage servicing assets reflecting higher prepayment speeds and $193,000 in compensation and benefits. The increase in non-interest expense was partially offset by a decrease of $146,000 in FDIC deposit insurance assessments due to the special assessment during the second quarter of 2009.
Total assets at September 30, 2010 increased to $303.8 million from $288.8 million at December 31, 2009. Total deposits at September 30, 2010 were $258.4 million, compared to $254.7 million at December 31, 2009. Total stockholders’ equity increased to $36.8 million at September 30, 2010 from $25.3 million at December 31, 2009. The increase in stockholders’ equity reflects the completion of the second step conversion of our mutual holding company and stock offering on July 14, 2010. At September 30, 2010, Jacksonville Savings Bank exceeded its applicable regulatory capital requirements with Tier 1 leverage, Tier 1 risk-based capital, and total risk-based capital ratios of 9.2%, 13.0%, and 14.2%, respectively.
