On July 18, 2020, Hoth Therapeutics, Inc. (the “Company”) filed a provisional patent application (the “Patent Application”) with the United States Patent and Trademark Office for the use of one of its current portfolio therapeutics to treat and prevent lung inflammation in patients suffering from a respiratory viral infection, such as that caused by coronoaviruses. The Company has an exclusive license agreement with respect to the use of this drug for other indications.
Coronaviruses (“CoV”) are a large family of viruses that cause illness ranging from the common cold to more severe diseases such as Middle East Respiratory Syndrome and Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS-CoV). In 2019, a novel coronavirus named SARS-CoV-2 was identified. Common signs of infection include respiratory symptoms, fever, cough, shortness of breath and breathing difficulties. In more severe cases, infection can cause pneumonia, severe acute respiratory syndrome, acute respiratory distress syndrome, kidney failure and even death. The Patent Application seeks to secure patent protection for the oral and intravenous administrations of the Company’s therapeutic to treat SARS-CoV.
