Item 8.01 Other Events.
On October 8, 2007, Progress Energy, Inc. (the "Company") issued a news release concerning Robert B. McGehee, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of the Company. The release indicated that Mr. McGehee had suffered an apparent stroke on Sunday, October 7, 2007, while on Company business in London and that, as of the time of the release, he remained in intensive care in a London hospital.
In accordance with the Company's bylaws, President and Chief Operating Officer William D. Johnson has assumed the CEO's duties in Mr. McGehee's absence. Additionally, the Executive Committee of the Board of Directors has appointed lead director John H. Mullin, III as Chairman during Mr. McGehee's absence.
