American Science and Engineering, Inc. Receives $2.9 Million Order
for Parcel and Z Backscatter X-ray Inspection Systems
BILLERICA, Mass. – September 15, 2005 – American Science and Engineering, Inc. (NASDAQ: ASEI) (AS&E®), a leader in X-ray detection technology, announced today the receipt of an order from an undisclosed government client for multiple parcel and Z® Backscatter X-ray inspection systems. The order totals approximately $2.9 million.

Z Backscatter Systems can be used as a stand-alone technology, or in combination with other technologies, including transmission, and Radioactive Threat Detection. Z Backscatter scanning can be implemented without the use of boom-mounted detectors, allowing for rapid drive-by screening of containers and vehicles for terrorist threats, trade fraud and contraband.
Parcel, Mail, and Baggage Inspection Systems offer varying tunnel sizes and configurations to fit various application and inspection environments. Compact X-ray units screen smaller items, including mail and briefcases; while larger, open-tunnel systems inspect oversized baggage and small cargo. These systems are primarily used in government facilities, airports, high-security federal facilities, commercial office buildings, and convention centers.
