References in this update to “Air Group,” “Company,” “we,” “us,” and “our” refer to Alaska Air Group, Inc. and its subsidiaries, unless otherwise specified.
This update includes expected operational and financial information, including operating cost per available seat mile, excluding fuel and other items (CASMex). Our disclosure of CASMex, provides us (and may provide investors) with the ability to measure and monitor our performance without these items. The most directly comparable GAAP measure is total operating expenses per available seat mile. Please see the cautionary statement under “Forward-Looking Information.”
We are providing information about estimated fuel prices. Management believes it is useful to compare results between periods on an “economic basis.” Economic fuel expense is defined as the raw or “into-plane” fuel cost less any cash we receive from hedge counterparties for hedges that settle during the period, offset by the recognition of premiums originally paid for those hedges that settle during the period. Economic fuel expense more closely approximates the net cash outflow associated with purchasing fuel for our operation.

For the first quarter, capacity, revenue, and CASMex have developed in line with our previously guided expectations. This result is despite weather-related disruptions to our operation in January and February. Our full quarter adjusted pre-tax margin expectations have softened slightly primarily due to elevated fuel costs which endured longer in the period than originally expected, impacting into-plane fuel as well as on-hand fuel inventories. We expect fuel costs will continue to be difficult to predict given market volatility for both crude oil prices and refining margins.
In the first quarter, we entered into a new letter of agreement with our pilots, represented by ALPA, which increases the portion of pilot sick leave balances that are eligible for cash out upon retirement. As a result, we expect to record a one time special charge of approximately $50 to $55 million in the first quarter representing the sick leave hours that eligible pilots are reasonably expected to have paid out upon retirement. Cash payment of this obligation will occur upon each individual pilot’s retirement, as it did under the pre-existing cash out clauses.
