HARLEYSVILLE GROUP COMMENTS ON IMPACT
FROM SECOND QUARTER CATASTROPHES
HARLEYSVILLE, PA—July 29, 2010—Harleysville Group Inc. (NASDAQ: HGIC) today announced that estimated catastrophe losses incurred during the second quarter will reduce operating income1 by $0.19 per share after taxes, and will impact the company’s statutory combined ratio2 by 3.8 points for the quarter. In the second quarter of 2009, when Harleysville Group reported operating income of $0.72 per share, the company experienced net catastrophe losses of $0.08 per share after taxes, which had a 1.7 point impact on the combined ratio. Harleysville Group expects to report operating income of $0.61 per share and a statutory combined ratio of 101.3 percent in the second qua rter of 2010 when the company announces its second quarter results on August 6.
“During the second quarter, we experienced a significantly greater frequency of severe weather throughout most of our operating territory. All told, we faced 12 second quarter storms that were classified as catastrophes,” commented Michael L. Browne, Harleysville Group’s president and chief executive officer. “The effects of these storms were overwhelming for many of our policyholders, as they were forced out of their homes and businesses, and their possessions were destroyed.
