Nature of the Business and Operations American Superconductor Corporation (together with its subsidiaries, “AMSC®” or the “Company”) was founded on April 9, 1987. Business Combination Disclosure [Text Block] | 2. 2021 On May 6, 2021, May 6, 2021 , Pursuant to the terms of the Neeltran Stock Purchase Agreement, the Company purchased all of the issued and outstanding shares of capital stock of Neeltran, Inc., a Connecticut corporation ("Neeltran") and Neeltran International, Inc., a Connecticut corporation ("International") for $1.0 million in cash and 301,556 shares of the Company's common stock, $.01 par value per share ("AMSC Shares"), that were paid and issued, respectively, to the Neeltran selling stockholders. The Company also paid $1.1 million to International selling stockholders to pay off previous loans made by them to Neeltran. The Company records a liability in its consolidated financial statements for these matters when a loss is known or considered probable and the amount can be reasonably estimated. Through the Company’s power grid offerings, the Grid business segment enables electric utilities, industrial facilities, and renewable energy project developers to connect, transmit and distribute power with exceptional efficiency, reliability, security and affordability through its transmission planning services, power electronics, and superconductor-based systems. The sales process is enabled by transmission planning services that allow it to identify power grid congestion, poor power quality and other risks, which helps the Company determine how its solutions can improve network performance. These services often lead to sales of grid interconnection solutions for wind farms and solar power plants, power quality systems, and transmission and distribution cable systems. The Company also sells ship protection products to the U.S. Navy through its Grid business segment.
