Losses on disposal of property, plant and equipment totaled US$293, US$376 and US$168 in 2009, 2008 and 2007, respectively. Mainly relate to losses on sales of ships and trucks, locomotives and other equipment, which were replaced in the normal course of business.
Assets given in guarantee of judicial processes totaled US$222 as of December31, 2009.
Hydroelectric assets
We participate in several jointly-owned hydroelectric plants, already in operation or under construction, in which we record our undivided interest in these assets as property, plant and equipment.
At December31, 2009 the cost of hydroelectric plants in service totaled US$1,382 (December31, 2008 US$1,162) and the related depreciation in the year was US$372 (December31, 2008 US$304). The cost of hydroelectric plant under construction at December31, 2009 totaled US$521 (December31, 2008 US$206). Income and operating expenses for such plants were not material.
Intangibles
All of the intangible assets recognized in our financial statements were acquired from third parties, either directly or through a business combination and have definite useful lives from 6 to 30years.
At December31, 2009 the intangible assets totaled US$1,173 (December31, 2008 - US$875), and comprised of rights granted by the government North-South Railroad of US$924 and off take-agreements of US$239.
