MESSAGE TO OUR SHAREHOLDERS (UNAUDITED)
Dear Shareholder,
We would like to start off by thanking you, our clients, for investing in the Spirit of America Energy Fund. We believe that the future of energy is bright. American energy independence has finally arrived at our doorstep and it is a welcomed and imminent event. We believe as American energy continues to assert itself on the world stage, the benefits could be substantial.
When we first began this fund in July of 2014 we believed that there has always been a strong and consistent demand for energy; that new sources of energy were creating investment opportunities; and that there was potential for long term growth in the energy sector. This vision is still firmly in place.
The Spirit of America Energy Fund’s investment philosophy moving into 2022 will be to continue to invest in the energy infrastructure of our country. We believe there is long term value to investing in companies that are involved in the midstream oil and gas sector. We are dedicated to diligently focusing on quality companies with the potential for long term growth.

MANAGEMENT DISCUSSION OF FUND PERFORMANCE (UNAUDITED)
Economic Summary
4th Quarter 2021
At the end of December, the U.S. Bureau of Economic Analysis released its final reading of 2021 gross domestic product (GDP), to show an increase in the annual growth rate of 2.3%, its slowest gain of the pandemic-era recovery, as supply chain disruptions and a marked deceleration in consumer spending inhibited expansion. The reading was revised from the previous 2.1% estimate and compares with increases of 6.4% and 6.7% in the first and second quarters, respectively. The 2.3% gain in the gross domestic product, a sum of all goods and services produced, marked the slowest GDP gain since the 31.2% plunge in the second quarter of 2020, which encompassed the period during which Covid-19 morphed into a global pandemic that resulted in a severe economic shutdown that sent tens of millions into unemployment and put a chokehold on activity across the country. Declines in residential fixed investment and federal government spending helped hold back gains, as did a surge in the U.S. trade deficit, which widened to a near-record $73.3 billion in August. Consumer spending, which makes up 69% of the $23.2 trillion U.S. economy, increased at just a 1.6% pace for the most recent period, after rising 12% in the second quarter. Despite the third and fourth quarter weakness, economists largely expect the U.S. to bounce back and continue to grow into 2022.
The number of jobs added to the U.S. payrolls accelerated in November, but was still well below expectations. The Labor Department reported that nonfarm payroll employment rose by a solid 210,000 jobs, but was below the lofty estimates of 573,000 according to economists. Despite the big hiring miss, the unemployment rate fell to 4.2% from 4.6%, even though the labor force participation rate increased for the month to 61.8%, its highest level since March 2020. Leisure and hospitality, which includes bars, restaurants, hotels and similar businesses, saw a gain of just 23,000 after being a leading job creator for much of the recovery. Though the sector has regained nearly 7 million of the jobs lost at the rock bottom of the pandemic, it remains about 1.3 million below its February 2020 level, with an unemployment rate stuck at 7.5%. Initial jobs tallies this year have seen substantial revisions, with months showing low counts initially often bumped higher. The October and September estimates were moved up a combined 82,000. Worker wages climbed for the month, rising 0.26% in November and 4.8% from a year ago.
During its December meeting, The Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) held benchmark interest rates near zero but indicated that rate hikes will very likely arrive next year, perhaps as many as three times. In its final meeting of 2021, the FOMC announced that it will ramp up the speed at which it pares its bond purchases, putting the nation’s central bank on course to eliminate the emergency quantitative easing (QE) program a few months earlier than expected. “Economic developments and changes in the outlook warrant this evolution,” Jerome H. Powell, the Fed chair, said of the decision to pull back on bond purchases more quickly. By tapering off its bond buying faster, the Fed is doing less to stimulate the economy with each passing month, and putting the program on track to end completely in March. That would place Fed policymakers in a position to raise interest rates sooner. The Fed has made it clear it wants to end its bond-buying program before it raises interest rates. The Fed’s new economic projections suggest interest rates, which have been at rock-bottom since March 2020, might rise to 2.1 percent by the end of 2024. Central bank officials, who are supposed to maintain price stability and foster full employment, have also been encouraged by strengthening in the job market. Fed officials estimated in their new economic projections that the unemployment rate would return to its pre-pandemic level of 3.5 percent by the end of 2022, sooner than they had previously forecast.
Market Commentary
During the Fund’s fiscal year which ended November 30, 2021, the S&P 500 provided a total return of 27.92%. The Alerian MLP Index, a leading gauge of energy MLPs, had a total return of over 37.11% the fiscal year 2021. The Standard and Poor’s 500 Energy Index had a total return of 55.65%. At the same time oil prices rose with U.S. crude oil closing at $66.18 on November 30th, up significantly from its low of $44.55 on December 01, 2020.
The U.S. macroeconomic forecast and the global macroeconomic forecast from Oxford Economics were finalized in mid-November before the Omicron variant was discovered. The emergence of this new variant brings about challenges to the U.S. Energy Information Administration’s (E.I.A) December outlook. In addition to uncertainty about macroeconomic

conditions, along with the evolving effects of consumer behavior on energy demand because of the pandemic present a wide range of potential scenarios for energy consumption. Supply uncertainty in the forecast results from the production decisions of OPEC+ and with the rate at which U.S. oil and natural gas producers increase drilling.
The E.I.A estimate that 99.7 million b/d of petroleum and liquid fuels was consumed globally in November, which represents a 4.9 million b/d increase from November 2020.
Total U.S. crude oil production was an estimated 11.7 million b/d in November. The E.I.A forecast that it will increase to an average of 11.8 million b/d in 2022.
On March 11, 2020, the World Health Organization announced that it had made the assessment that COVID-19 can be characterized as a pandemic. The impact of COVID-19, and other infectious illness outbreaks that may arise in the future, could adversely affect the economies of many nations or the entire global economy, individual issuers and capital markets in ways that cannot necessarily be foreseen. Public health crises caused by the COVID-19 outbreak may exacerbate other pre-existing political, social and economic risks in certain countries or globally. The duration of the COVID-19 outbreak and its effects cannot be determined with certainty.
Fund Summary
The Spirit of America Energy Fund, SOAEX (the “Fund”), remained diversified across many U.S. geographic areas, with a heavy focus on midstream MLPs. The Fund had a total return of 33.75% (no load, gross of fees) for fiscal year ended November 30, 2020. This compares to the 27.92% returned by its benchmark, the S&P 500 Index, for the same period. Including sales charge and expenses, as of November 30, 2020 the Fund’s fiscal year return was 24.13%. The Fund’s outperformance relative to its benchmark was principally due to its focus solely on the energy segment of the market compared to the S&P 500 which is a broader perspective.
The Fund’s allocations to the Midstream Oil & Gas, Exploration & Production, and Refining & Marketing sectors contributed most to the Fund’s performance. The energy sector was the top performing sector in the S&P 500 this year.
The material factors that affected the Fund were market direction, stock selection, and the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic. The value of the Fund and the securities in which the Fund invests may be adversely affected by impacts caused by COVID-19 and other epidemics and pandemics that may arise in the future. The holdings of the Fund were chosen based on consideration of several factors including market capitalization, stable and strong balance sheets relative to peers, and companies with promising growth potential. The Fund did not rely on derivatives or leverage strategies, and focused on U.S. based energy companies.

Note 1 – Organization
Spirit of America Energy Fund (the “Fund”), a series of Spirit of America Investment Fund, Inc. (the “Company”), is an open-end mutual fund registered under the Investment Company Act of 1940, as amended (the “1940 Act”). The Company was incorporated under the laws of Maryland on May 15, 1997. The Company offers 6 separate series, or mutual funds (the “Spirit of America Funds”), each with its own investment objective and strategy. The Fund commenced operations on July 10, 2014. The investment objective of the Fund is to provide investors long-term capital appreciation and current income.
The Fund currently offers Class A Shares, Class C Shares and Institutional Shares. Each class of shares for the Fund has identical rights and privileges except with respect to distribution (12b-1) and service fees, voting rights on matters affecting a single class of shares, exchange privileges of each class of shares and sales charges. The price at which the Fund will offer or redeem shares is the net asset value (“NAV”) per share next determined after the order is considered received, subject to any applicable front end or contingent deferred sales charges. Class A shares have a maximum sales charge on purchases of 5.75% as a percentage of the original purchase price. A Contingent Deferred Sales Charge (“CDSC”) of 1.00% may be imposed on redemptions of Class A shares that were purchased within one year of the redemption date where an indirect commission was paid. A CDSC of 1.00% on Class C Shares applies to shares sold within 13 months of purchase.
Effective April 17, 2020 and April 20, 2018, the Fund underwent a 1-for-3 reverse share split. The effect of the reverse share split transactions was to divide the number of outstanding shares of the Fund by the reverse split factor, with a corresponding increase in the net asset value per share. These transactions did not change the net assets of the Fund or the value of a shareholder’s investment. The historical share transactions presented in the Statements of Changes in Net Assets and per share data presented in the Financial Highlights have been adjusted retroactively to give effect to each reverse share split.
Note 2 – Significant Accounting Policies
The Fund is an investment company and follows accounting and reporting guidance under Financial Accounting Standards Board Accounting Standards Codification (“ASC”) Topic 946, “Financial Services-Investment Companies”. The following is a summary of significant accounting policies consistently followed by the Fund in the preparation of its financial statements. These policies are in conformity with generally accepted accounting principles in the United States of America (“GAAP”) for investment companies.
A. Security Valuation: The offering price and NAV per share for the Fund are calculated as of the close of regular trading on the New York Stock Exchange (“NYSE”), currently 4:00 p.m., Eastern Time on each day the NYSE is open for trading. The Fund’s securities are valued at the official close or the last reported sales price on the principal exchange on which the security trades, or if no sales price is reported, the mean of the latest bid and asked prices is used. Securities traded over-the-counter are priced at the mean of the latest bid and asked prices. Unlisted securities traded in the over-the-counter market are valued using an evaluated quote provided by the independent pricing service, or, if an evaluated quote is unavailable, such securities are valued using prices received from dealers, provided that if the dealer supplies both bid and ask prices, the price to be used is the mean of the bid and asked prices. The independent pricing service derives an evaluated quote by obtaining dealer quotes, analyzing the listed markets, reviewing trade execution data and employing sensitivity analysis. Evaluated quotes may also reflect appropriate factors such as individual characteristics of the issue, communications with broker-dealers, and other market data. Fund securities for which market quotations are not readily available are valued at fair value as determined in good faith under procedures established by and under the supervision of the Board.
B. Fair Value Measurements: Various inputs are used in determining the fair value of investments which are as follows:

The Fund did not hold any investments at any time during the reporting period in which significant unobservable inputs were used in determining fair value; therefore, no reconciliation of Level 3 securities is included for this reporting period.
C. Security Transactions and Related Income: The Fund follows industry practice and records security transactions on the trade date for financial reporting purposes. The specific identification method is used for determining gains or losses for financial statement and income tax purposes. Dividend income is recorded on the ex-dividend date and interest income is recorded on an accrual basis. Discounts and premiums on securities purchased are accreted or amortized using the effective interest method, if applicable.
D. Federal Income Taxes: The Fund is taxed as a regular C-corporation for federal income tax purposes. This differs from most investment companies, which elect to be treated as “regulated investment companies” under the Code in order to avoid paying entity level income taxes. Under current law, the Fund is not eligible to elect treatment as a regulated investment company due to its investments primarily in Master Limited Partnerships (“MLPs”) invested in energy assets. As a result, the Fund will be obligated to pay applicable federal and state corporate income taxes on its taxable income as opposed to most other investment companies which are not so obligated. The Fund expects that a portion of the distributions it receives from MLPs may be treated as a tax-deferred return of capital, thus reducing the Fund’s current tax liability. However, the amount of taxes currently paid by the Fund will vary depending on the amount of income and gains derived from investments and/ or sales of MLP interests and such taxes will reduce your return from an investment in the Fund.
Cash distributions from MLPs to the Fund that exceed such Fund’s allocable share of such MLPs net taxable income are considered a tax-deferred return of capital that will reduce the Fund’s adjusted tax basis in the equity securities of the MLP. These reductions in such Fund’s adjusted tax basis in the MLP equity securities will increase the amount of gain (or decrease the amount of loss) recognized by the Fund on a subsequent sale of the securities. The Fund will accrue deferred income taxes for any future tax liability associated with (i) that portion of MLP distributions considered to be a tax-deferred return of capital as well as (ii) capital appreciation of its investments. Upon the sale of an MLP security, the Fund may be liable for previously deferred taxes. The Fund will rely to some extent on information provided by the MLPs, which is not necessarily timely, to estimate deferred tax liability for purposes of financial statement reporting and determining the NAV. From time to time, the Fund will modify the estimates or assumptions related to the Fund’s deferred tax liability as new information becomes available. The Fund will generally compute deferred income taxes based on the marginal regular federal income tax rate applicable to corporations and an assumed rate attributable to state taxes.
Since the Fund will be subject to taxation on its taxable income, the NAV of Fund shares will also be reduced by the accrual of any deferred tax liabilities. The S&P 500 Index (the “Index”), however, is calculated without any adjustments for taxes. As a result, the Fund’s after tax performance could differ significantly from the Index even if the pretax performance of the Fund and the performance of the Index are closely correlated.

Net operating loss carryforwards are available to offset future taxable income. Prior to the passing of the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) Act, Net Operating Losses (“NOLs”) were subject to the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act (TCJA) but are now governed under the CARES Act. Under the CARES Act, NOLs arising in tax years beginning after December 31, 2017, and before January 1, 2021 may be carried back five tax years and carried forward twenty years. Since the enactment of the TCJA, NOLs generally could not be carried back but could be carried forward indefinitely. Further, the TCJA limited NOL absorption to 80% of taxable income. The CARES Act temporarily removes the 80% limitation, reinstating it for tax years beginning after December 31, 2020. The Fund reviews the recoverability of its deferred tax assets based upon the weight of available evidence. When assessing the recoverability of its deferred tax assets, significant weight was given to the effects of potential future realized and unrealized gains on investments and the period over which these deferred tax assets can be realized.

Based upon the Fund’s assessment, it has determined that it is more likely than not that a portion of its deferred tax assets will not be realized through future taxable income of the appropriate character. Accordingly, a valuation allowance has been established for the Fund’s deferred tax assets. The Fund will continue to assess the need for additional valuation allowance in the future. Significant changes in the fair value of its portfolio investments may change the Fund’s assessment of the recoverability of these assets and may impact the valuation allowances recorded against all or a portion of the Fund’s gross deferred tax assets.

The Fund recognizes interest accrued related to unrecognized tax benefits and penalties as income tax expense. For the fiscal year ended November 30, 2021, the Fund had no accrued penalties or interest.
The Fund recognizes the tax benefits of uncertain tax positions only where the position is “more likely than not” to be sustained assuming examination by tax authorities. Management has analyzed the Fund’s tax positions, and has concluded that no liability for unrecognized tax benefits should be recorded related to uncertain tax positions taken on U.S. tax returns and state tax returns filed since inception of the fund. No U.S. federal or state income tax returns are currently under examination. The tax periods ended November 30, 2018, November 30, 2019 and November 30, 2020 remain subject to examination by tax authorities in the United States. Due to the nature of the Fund’s investments, the Fund may be required to file income tax returns in several states. The Fund is not aware of any tax positions for which it is reasonably possible that the total amounts of unrecognized tax benefits will change materially in the next 12 months.

E. Use of Estimates: In preparing financial statements in conformity with GAAP, management makes estimates and assumptions that affect the reported amounts of assets and liabilities at the date of the financial statements, as well as the reported amounts of revenues and expenses during the reporting period. Actual results could differ from those estimates.
F. Distributions to Shareholders: The Board has set a distribution policy in which the Fund pays fixed rate monthly distributions to shareholders, all or a portion of which is expected to be characterized as return of capital. Return of capital distributions will generally not be taxable to the shareholders for U.S. federal income tax purposes. The final determination of the amount of the Fund’s return of capital distributions for the period will be made after the end of each calendar year.

G. Allocation of Income, Expenses, Gains and Losses: Income, expenses (other than those attributable to a specific class), gains and losses are allocated on a daily basis to each class of shares based upon the relative proportion of net assets represented by such class. Operating expenses directly attributable to a specific class are charged against the operations of that class.
Note 3 – Derivative Transactions
Written Options Contracts – The Fund may write options contracts for which premiums received are recorded as liabilities and are subsequently adjusted to the current value of the options written. Premiums received from writing options which expire are treated as realized gains. Premiums received from writing options which are either exercised or closed are offset against the proceeds received or the amount paid on the transaction to determine realized gains or losses. Investing in written options contracts exposes a Fund to equity price risk.
The Fund’s use of derivatives for the fiscal year ended November 30, 2021, was limited to written options.
The month-end average notional amount for the fiscal year ended November 30, 2021 was $102,234. Following is a summary of how these derivatives are treated in the financial statements and their impact on the Fund. The Fund did not hold any written option contracts as of November 30, 2021.

A. Recently Issued Accounting Pronouncement
In October 2020, the Securities and Exchange Commission (the “SEC”) adopted new regulations governing the use of derivatives by registered investment companies (“Rule 18f-4”). The Fund will be required to comply with Rule 18f-4 by August 19, 2022. Once implemented, Rule 18f-4 will impose limits on the amount of derivatives a fund can enter into, eliminate the asset segregation framework currently used by funds to comply with Section 18 of the 1940 Act, treat derivatives as senior securities and require funds whose use of derivatives is more than a limited specified exposure amount to establish and maintain a comprehensive derivatives risk management program and appoint a derivatives risk manager. The Fund is currently evaluating the impact, if any, of this provision.
Note 4 – Purchases and Sales of Securities
Purchases and proceeds from the sales of securities for the fiscal year ended November 30, 2021, excluding short-term investments, were $ 10,450,034 and $ 37,887,347, respectively.
Note 5 – Investment Management Fee and Other Transactions with Affiliates
Spirit of America Management Corp. (the “Adviser”) has been retained to act as the Fund’s investment adviser pursuant to an Investment Advisory Agreement (the “Advisory Agreement”). The Adviser was incorporated in 1997 and is a registered investment adviser under the Investment Advisers Act of 1940, as amended. Under the Advisory Agreement, the Fund pays the Adviser a monthly fee of 1/12 of 0.95% of the Fund’s average daily net assets. Investment advisory fees for the fiscal year ended November 30, 2021 were $1,726,742.
The Fund has adopted a Plan of Distribution (the “12b-1 Plan”) pursuant to Rule 12b-1 under the 1940 Act. The 12b-1 Plan permits the Fund or class, as applicable, to pay David Lerner Associates, Inc. (the “Distributor”) from its own assets for the Distributor’s services and expenses in distributing shares of the Fund (“12b-1 fees”) and providing personal services and/or maintaining shareholder accounts (“service fees”). The Fund’s Class A Shares pay a 12b-1 fee at the annual rate of 0.25% of average daily net assets. With respect to Class C Shares, the fee paid to the Distributor by the Fund is 1.00% of the average daily net assets of the Class C Shares. Of this amount, 0.75% represents distribution fees and 0.25% represents shareholder servicing fees paid to the Distributor or to institutions that have agreements with the Distributor to provide such services. The Fund’s Institutional Class Shares do not have a 12b-1 Plan. Each class of shares of the Fund has exclusive voting

rights with respect to its 12b-1 Plan. Since 12b-1 fees are paid out of the assets of the respective share class of the Fund on an on-going basis, over time these fees will increase the cost of your investment and may cost you more than paying other types of sales charges. For the fiscal year ended November 30, 2021, fees paid to the Distributor under the Plan were $468,157.
The Fund’s Class A Shares are subject to an initial sales charge imposed at the time of purchase, in accordance with the Fund’s current prospectus. For the fiscal year ended November 30, 2021, sales charges received by the Distributor were $832,593. CDSC fees collected for the fiscal year ended November 30, 2021 were $1,070 for Class A Shares and $822 for Class C Shares.
Certain Officers and Directors of the Company are “affiliated persons”, as that term is defined in the 1940 Act, of the Adviser or the Distributor. Each Director of the Company, who is not an affiliated person of the Adviser or Distributor, receives a quarterly retainer of $6,000, $1,500 for each Board meeting attended, $500 for each special meeting attended, and $500 for each committee meeting attended plus reimbursement for certain travel and other out-of-pocket expenses incurred in connection with attending Board meetings. Prior to January 1, 2021, the quarterly retainer received by each Director who is not an affiliated person of the Adviser or Distributor was $7,800. The Company does not compensate the Officers directly for the services they provide. There are no Directors’ fees paid to affiliated Directors of the Company. For the fiscal year ended November 30, 2021, the Fund was allocated $6,765 of the Chief Compliance Officer’s salary.
Note 6 – Concentration and Other Risks
The Fund concentrates its investments in securities and other assets of energy and energy related companies. A fund that invests primarily in a particular sector could experience greater volatility than funds investing in a broader range of industries. Due to the fact that the Fund normally invests at least 80% of its assets in the securities of companies principally engaged in activities in the energy industry, the Fund’s performance largely depends on the overall condition of the energy industry. The energy industry could be adversely affected by energy prices, supply-and-demand for energy resources, and various political, regulatory, and economic factors. Investments in securities of MLPs involve risks that differ from investments in common stock, including risks related to limited control and limited rights to vote on matters affecting the MLP, risks related to potential conflicts of interest between the MLP and the MLP’s general partner, cash flow risks, dilution risks and risks related to the general partner’s right to require unit holders to sell their common units at an undesirable time or price. The Fund’s prospectus contains more information regarding these risks and other risks related to the Fund as well as other information about the Fund, and should be read carefully before investing.
Note 7 – Line of Credit
The Company participates in a short-term credit agreement (“Line of Credit”) with The Huntington National Bank, the custodian of the Fund’s investments expiring on May 18, 2022. Borrowings under this agreement bear interest at London Interbank Offered Rate (“LIBOR”) plus 1.500%. Maximum borrowings for the Company is the lesser of $3,000,000 or 10% of the Spirit of America Funds’ daily market value. The Fund did had outstanding borrowings in the amount of as of $181,461 for the fiscal year ended November 30, 2021. Pre-Approval of Audit and Permitted Non-Audit Services Provided to the Company
Pre-Approval Requirements. The Committee shall pre-approve all auditing services and permissible non-audit services (e.g., tax services) to be provided to the Company by the Auditor, including the fees therefor. The Committee may delegate to one or more of its members the authority to grant pre-approvals. In connection with such delegation, the Committee shall establish pre-approval policies and procedures, including the requirement that the decisions of any member to whom authority is delegated under this section (B) shall be presented to the full Committee at each of its scheduled meetings.
De Minimis Exception to Pre-Approval: Pre-approval for a permitted non-audit service shall not be required if:
| a. | the aggregate amount of all such non-audit services is not more than 5% of the total revenues paid by the Company to the Auditor in the fiscal year in which the non-audit services are provided; |
| b. | such services were not recognized by the Company at the time of the engagement to be non-audit services; and |
| c. | such services are promptly brought to the attention of the Committee and approved prior to the completion of the audit by the Committee or by one or more members of the Committee to whom authority to grant such approvals has been delegated by the Committee. |
Additionally, the Committee shall pre-approve the Auditor’s engagements for non-audit services with the Adviser and any affiliate of the Adviser that provides ongoing services to the Company in accordance with the foregoing, if the engagement relates directly to the operations and financial reporting of the Company, unless the aggregate amount of all services provided constitutes no more than 5% of the total amount of revenues paid to the Auditor by the Company, the Adviser and any affiliate of the Adviser that provides ongoing services to the Company during the fiscal year in which the services are provided that would have to be pre-approved by the Committee pursuant to this paragraph (without regard to this exception).
