Biodel Inc. Reports First Quarter Fiscal Year 2008 Financial Results
DANBURY, Conn., February 14, 2008 — Biodel Inc. (Nasdaq: BIOD) today reported financial results for its first quarter ended December 31, 2007. The net loss for the quarter was $11.0 million or $0.55 per share.
“Completing enrollment of our two pivotal Phase III clinical trials of VIAject™ positions us to meet our goal of submitting a new drug application to the FDA by the end of 2008,” stated Dr. Solomon Steiner, CEO and Chairman of Biodel. “We are on track to complete the clinical trials of VIAject™ by the end of July and look forward to reporting top line results in the beginning of the fourth calendar quarter.”
Three Months Ended December 31, 2007
Biodel reported a net loss for the first quarter ended December 31, 2007 of $11.0 million, or $0.55 per share, as compared to a net loss of $3.7 million, or $0.31 per share, for the comparable period in the prior year. Net loss for the first quarter of fiscal year 2008 includes $2.5 million of stock-based compensation expenses.
Biodel reported no revenue during the three months ended December 31, 2007 and December 31, 2006.
Research and development expenses were $7.5 million for the three months ended December 31, 2007, compared to $2.5 million for the comparable period in the prior year. The increase in quarterly expenses was primarily due to a $3.4 million increase related to the pivotal Phase III clinical trial program evaluating VIAject™, a $0.5 million increase related to the scale-up and manufacture of commercial batches of VIAject™ to support the Company’s clinical trials and regulatory submissions, and $0.5 million in personnel-related expenses.
General and administrative expenses totaled $4.1 million for the three months ended December 31, 2007, compared to $1.3 million for the comparable period in the prior year. The increase for the quarter was primarily attributable to $2.5 million in personnel-related expenses, which includes $1.1 million in stock-based compensation expenses, and $1.1 million in stock-based compensation and salary and benefits continuation charges related to the severance agreement with the Company’s former chief financial officer. The balance of the increase was due to increases in accounting, legal and consulting fees associated with the preparation to become and operate as a public company.
At the end of the first quarter 2008, Biodel had cash and cash equivalents of $72.8 million and 20.3 million shares outstanding.
