Critical Accounting Policies; Critical Accounting Estimates
During the six-month period ended March 31, 2023, there was no significant change in the Company’s critical accounting policies or the application of critical accounting policies as disclosed in the Company’s Annual Report on Form 10-K, as amended, for the year ended September 30, 2022.
Comparison of Financial Condition at March 31, 2023 and September 30, 2022
Cash and Cash Equivalents. Cash and cash equivalents increased $145,000 from $41.7 million at September 30, 2022 to $41.8 million at March 31, 2023.
Loans. Net loans receivable increased $123.9 million, from $1.47 billion at September 30, 2022 to $1.60 billion at March 31, 2023, primarily due to growth in residential mortgage loans, single tenant net lease commercial real estate loans and other commercial real estate loans, which increased by $77.9 million, $31.0 million, and $15.1 million, respectively.
Loans Held for Sale. Loans held for sale decreased $11.7 million, from $60.5 million at September 30, 2022 to $48.8 million at March 31, 2023, due to a decrease in residential mortgage loans held for sale of $2.3 million and a decrease in SBA loans held for sale of $9.4 million. The decreases in residential mortgage loans held for sale and SBA loans held for sale were due to loan sales outpacing originations during the period.
Securities Available for Sale. Securities available for sale increased $18.4 million, from $316.5 million at September 30, 2022 to $334.9 million at March 31, 2023, due to increases in fair value of $16.3 million due to decreases in market interest rates and purchases of $9.3 million, partially offset by calls and maturities of $6.3 million and principal repayments of $2.5 million.
Securities Held to Maturity. Investment securities held to maturity decreased $130,000 from $1.6 million at September 30, 2022 to $1.4 million at March 31, 2023, due primarily to calls and maturities during the period.
Mortgage Servicing Rights. Residential mortgage loan servicing rights decreased $2.1 million, from $63.3 million at September 30, 2022 to $61.2 million at March 31, 2023, primarily due to changes in fair value related to loan repayments of $2.1 million.
